South African Lions stalwart Mtutuzeli Hlomela has recently moved on from his position as National Talent Manager with AFL South Africa to pursue alternative employment in Johannesburg.

 

Mtutu will be remembered by many in world footy circles as the charismatic mid-fielder who represented South Africa with distinction at three AFL International Cups (2002, 2005, 2008), including selection in the World Team on two occasions. His most recent appearance as skipper in 2008, saw the SA Lions finish third following a thrilling one point victory over Ireland in the consolation final. 

 

More recently, Mtutu has helped establish AFL South Africa’s Talent program, with hopes that the SA Lions will perform one better in the 2011 International Cup by making the Grand Final.

 

“Mtutu’s pioneering contribution to the game as a player and leader in South Africa has been significant, paving the way for other young players to follow suit and possibly take things one step further in the years ahead” said AFL National Talent Manager/AFLSA Board member Kevin Sheehan, who has followed Mtutu’s progress since 1997. 

 

Inaugural Mtutuzeli Hlomela scholarship winner, 19 year old Greater Western Sydney recruit Bayanda Sobetwa, is one example of a young man who is taking his opportunity in Australia with both hands. Hopefully there are more to follow in the years ahead.
