Michael O’Loughlin, on his second visit to South Africa in 2010, coached the South African Lions team and was impressed with their willingness to learn.

THE AUSTRALIAN under-17 AIS / AFL Academy side comfortably accounted for the South African Lions in Cape Town on the weekend.
 
Played at Sahara Park, Newlands Cricket Ground, in the shadow of Table Mountain, it was the first Australian football match to be played at the historic ground since Brisbane Lions and Fremantle played in 1998. 
 
AIS-AFL Academy high performance coach Jason McCartney was delighted with his charges and the setting for the match.
 
"It was an unbelievable day in Cape Town - it was 26 or 27 degrees - and the backdrop of Newlands was spectacular, although it was a small ground," he said.
 
"Our boys played really well… the pleasing thing for us was getting good ground time and everyone got some good confidence from the game."

“The key difference between the two teams was the ability of the Aussies to handle the ball under pressure, a skill developed from a young age, which will no doubt come to the South Africans as they gain more experience”, said O’Loughlin
