BLUESCOPE STEEL ADD STRENGTH TO WESTERN CAPE FOOTYWILD
“BlueScope Steel is very pleased to have formed a partnership with AFL South Africa in the promotion of Australian Rules Football and the social development of its players in the Western Cape”
Wayne Miller, General Manager, BlueScope Steel Southern Africa
AFL South Africa is proud to announce a new partner for footyWILD in the Western Cape with Australian company Bluescope Steel putting their weight behind the local Extreme competition for Open age players in Cape Town.
The Western Cape footyWILD Extreme Cup presented by Clean COLORBOND is the country’s most progressive open age competition in a code that has enjoyed rapid growth in recent times.
Since 2007, an estimated 2500 players mainly confined to the North West Province, has grown to 17,000 participants via expansion to new Provinces in Gauteng, Kwa Zulu Natal and the Western Cape.
footyWILD is the mass participation program which offers an introductory stage for 8-13 year olds (footyWILD BIG 5 & Game Day) and competitive levels for Secondary players (footyWILD High) and Open age (FootyWILD Extreme).
“BlueScope Steel is very pleased to have formed a partnership with AFL South Africa in the promotion of Australian Rules Football and the social development of its players in the Western Cape”, said General Manager, BlueScope Steel Southern Africa , Wayne Miller
“It is pleasing to see the on going development of the game in the Western Cape and the enjoyment of the players involved each Sunday. We wish all six footy Wild Extreme teams every success for the season“, said Mr Miller.
AFL South Africa’s Allison Simons has been there since day one and is thrilled by the evolution of the competition,
“Cape Town’s Extreme competition has emerged from humble beginnings in 2007, when we started playing ad-hoc games in the townships of Nyanga and Khayelitsha,” said Ms Simons.
“When those first two teams turned up with 10 players each and we really needed 18 to start a fully fledged game, we played anyhow rewarding those who had made the effort to come – we told them to bring a friend next time and they did – before long we had more than enough for four teams from Nyanga and Khayelitsha – ‘it has grown from there and through the generous sponsorship of BlueScope Steel and Clean COLORBOND we now have quality playing uniforms for all six Clubs this season” said Simons.
There are now two Nyanga teams – the Bluebirds and Thunderstorm, two teams from Khayelitsha – the Divines and the Real Kangaroos with the Mitchell Plains Warriors and Gugulethu Cheetahs making up the six Clubs.
