MAGPIES CHANCE THREE IN A ROW
The Western Cape Magpies are attempting to win their third National Championships in as many years at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom in South Africa’s North West Province this week, after winning back-to-back events in 2009 and 2010.
This will be fourth National Championships since 2008 when the North West Dockers took out the inaugural award at the same ground. Other Provinces competing in search of their first title are the Gauteng Blues and Kwa Zulu Natal Eagles.
Melbourne-based AFL talent development expert Stewart Edge is in South Africa for the Nationals to oversee selection of the 2011 South African Lions team scheduled to participate in the fourth AFL International Cup in Australia this August.
Edge is a regular to South Africa having spent valuable time in the South African Lions camp mentoring SA’s emerging coaches and players since 2008.
“It will be exciting to see the development of emerging players in what promises to be a new look South African Lions team from the one which finished third in 2008”, said Edge.
“Hopefully we can find another young Bayanda Sobetwa who is currently listed with Port Melbourne in the VFL or a Khaya Sikiti or Tshobolko Moagi, both playing with South Launceston in the Tasmanian State League,” added Edge.
